OT vs. IT: Why Pureplay Software & Automation Vendors Hit a Wall in Industrial data Integration

Overview
One of our esteemed clients – a renowned large size water treatment solution provider, wanted to connect their plant to an IoT solution for remote monitoring.
They wanted to use a specific, highly secure gateway for remote VPN data access.
Their IoT vendor - coming from the software background hit an absolute wall. They couldn't create OT data integration, perfectly illustrating this industry-wide challenge.
Our client approached us for helping them with the required secure data connectivity to the designated IoT solution. Trimasys team intervened with following pivot:
· Leveraged Native Automation Expertise: Since we engineered the underlying automation system, we seamlessly integrated the complex industrial communication protocols to the client specific IT gateway.
· Custom VPN & Security Architecture: configured a secure, robust VPN tunnel that satisfied both IT security compliance and OT real-time data needs.
The Reality of Industrial data integration – What is the real problem?
Industrial automation (OT), however, is a completely different proposition. It operates on complex, deterministic protocols—think Modbus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP etc. and intricate PLC architectures, unlike a highly standardised IT data connectivity and data structures. Add to this the complexities of IT- OT integration.
Without a deep, foundational understanding of industrial automation and OT : L1 through L3 integration, pure play software as well as automation vendors simply cannot carry out such integration.
The Takeaway
Today, the client has smooth, secure, and uninterrupted remote data access that fully align with their needs and security standards.
Kudos to our automation and IoT team once again for their technical expertise!
